Beginners - Vail Green Runs

For first-timers or those looking to cruise casually, Vail’s ski runs offer a welcoming introduction to mountain life with wide, scenic greens perfect for building confidence.

Start your day on the Sourdough Express (Lift 14), which is home to tree-lined green runs like Sourdough, Booth Gardens, and Tin Pants, where soft grooming and low traffic make for easy turns. Nearby, the Avanti Express (Lift 2) provides another approachable zone with gentle, well-groomed routes such as Practice Parkway and Eagle’s Nest Ridge, ideal for refining your technique while taking in views of the Gore Range.

For an even smoother start, the Golden Peak and Lionshead base areas include learning zones and beginner lifts that connect directly to mellow terrain, ensuring you can ease into the rhythm without any scary steep descents. Bunny slopes for the win!

These greens deliver the best opportunity on Vail Mountain for stopping to soak in the sunny slopes and alpine scenery. After your session, enjoy a smooth glide back to Vail Village to Base Camp, our private ski valet and equipment rental, thoughtfully designed for comfort and ease. From there, return to The Sebastian Vail to relax with hot chocolate and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Intermediate - Vail Blue Runs

If you’re ready to explore beyond the green zones, Vail rewards intermediate skiers and snowboarders with endless blues that combine flow, length, and incredible scenery.

A can’t-miss highlight among Vail ski runs is Riva Ridge. The nearly four-mile descent from the summit transitions from sweeping pitches to thrilling steeper sections near the bottom. It’s a true rite of passage for Vail skiers. Note that towards the bottom of Riva, the difficulty rating does transition from blue to black.

On the Front Side of Vail Mountain, the Avanti Express (Lift 2) and Eagle Bahn Gondola (Lift 19) deliver access to some of the mountain’s most satisfying groomers, including Born Free, Pickeroon, and Cub’s Way. These runs are ideal for carving wide turns and finding your rhythm at higher speeds. Midday, link up with the rolling blues Bwana or Simba that will bring you straight back toward Lionshead Village.

Vail’s extensive lineup of runs means that intermediates can explore new zones daily without ever feeling over-challenged or bored. With every lap, confidence grows…which might just mean you’re ready for the big leagues.

Advanced - Vail Black Diamonds and Double Blacks

For thrill-seekers chasing speed, pitch, and precision, the front side of Vail Mountain offers plenty of expert terrain that proves you don’t need to venture into the back bowls for a challenge. These Vail ski runs test even the most seasoned skiers and riders with steep fall lines, mogul fields, and narrow chutes that demand focus and finesse.

Start with Prima, Pronto, and Highline, a trio of steep black diamond runs beneath the Highline Express Lift, known for their long, bumpy descents and consistent pitch. For something even spicier, Northwoods delivers sustained vertical with sections of ungroomed powder after a storm. Over near Avanti, Powerline and Kangaroo Cornice are local favorites for short, technical bursts that get your heart pumping.

Double-black enthusiasts can drop into Lindsey’s, where tight trees and natural terrain create a raw, rewarding ride.

Exploring Vail’s Back Bowls

Vail’s famed back bowls are a sprawling expanse of wide-open fields and rolling terrain that stretches over six miles. These iconic slopes capture the essence of Colorado skiing: breathtaking views, endless powder, and a feeling of pure freedom.

For strong intermediates, China Bowl and Sun Up Bowl are perfect introductions, featuring groomed blues like Poppyfields East & West that balance adventure without making you feel out of your element. Confident skiers can explore Tea Cup Bowl, where soft snow and playful pitches keep things interesting.

Experts, meanwhile, gravitate toward the steeper faces of Siberia and Mongolia. These legendary spots are known for deep powder, challenging chutes, and adrenaline-filled descents. Many sections of these bowls are noteworthy for not having visible ski lifts, making them feel truly remote and truly epic.

Whether you carve smooth arcs through a groomed bowl or drop into untouched snow after a storm, the Back Bowls’ runs deliver the ultimate Vail experience for those ready to tackle it.
