On May 16, 2010, Aspen, Colorado's Christy Mahon, became the first woman (and seventh person overall) to climb and ski all 54 of Colorado's 14,000-foot peaks. Accomplishing her goal with poise and resolve, Mahon has become a role model to many through this unprecedented feat that spanned nearly six years in the making. An avid outdoor enthusiast who counts skiing, running and tennis among her recreational pursuits, her ski mountaineering goal began in 2004 when she had finishing hiking all the 14ers. Her husband, Ted Mahon, who had also hiked them was well on his way to skiing all 54. By the time he finished in 2008 (becoming the third person ever to do so), she had already skied more than 30 peaks alongside him. And that's when skiing the peaks became a project of her own.
Understandably, the journey didn't always encompass cooperative weather and effortless outings. When conditions seemed precarious for a successful summit, she made sound judgments to retreat and plan to return another day. Some of the climbs required a middle of the night start in order to reach the summit early to mid-morning before the snow could melt and be prone to avalanche. Carefully prodding along, she reached her goal with the final summit of Capitol Peak in the spring of 2010, surrounded by several close friends and fellow adventurers.
Since successfully completing her ambitious endeavor, Mahon has earned a reputation as an ambassador to Aspen and the mountaineering community. From joining Good Morning America as a guest host to being featured in publications including Outside and Skiing magazines to gracing the October 2011 cover of Experience Life Magazine, her accomplishments continue to be celebrated and acknowledged by many.
This month, she'll bring her enthusiastic spirit and enthralling story to The Sebastian - Vail, presenting a slideshow of her journey thus far and sharing details of additional pursuits.
Benefiting the Youth Foundation of Vail, Christy's 14er Ski Descents takes place at 7 pm, Friday, November 18, at The Sebastian, followed by a Q & A with the audience and a post-event reception.
